Re: Know your Vet

Definitely agree Vicki - you can also often get assistance with medication etc. Our vet isn't a goat expert but is willing to learn and ask questions and research things that may help if I have a sick doe - so that's important as well. :D

Re: Mastitis in my cow....

Good luck with everything Hayley! And definitely agree with Heidi - start giving a treat a couple of times a week so they will come when you call them - it will make life a lot easier! I'm not used to dealing with cows but speaking from a goat perspective - we hand milk our girls twice a day and the...

Re: Mastitis in my cow....

Gee those teats look sore and very badly cracked! I would say that is one of the reasons she is not letting the calf feed. You may need to get some good udder cream and rub it in the soften them up. If she is not tame you may need to get her into a crush so you can treat it. Have you got a crush? Sh...

Re: Worms

Thats great! I have a couple of does that aren't performing very well and we have done worm testing but no issues there. We are now having soil tests done to check for mineral deficiences. I do already supplement my girls with minerals but in some of them it may not be enough.

Re: The First Kids Have Arrived!

The kids are fully botle fed - no trips to mum this year. I'm planning on trying to do some milk testing/recording so need to have the girls at full milking capacity to achieve the best results I can. :D

Oooh what a great find! Thanks Vicki!

I have my alpaca fleece spun but we only have white and fawn animals. This will be great to get some other colours to add into my stash! :D

Re: The First Kids Have Arrived!

Kidding has finished! All up I had seven does kid and I ended up with 6 bucks and 6 does with only that one dead kid lost at birth. All are now on the bottle and thriving! Pretty full on at the moment with milking twice a day and bubs on the go! Definitely keeps life intersting! Disbusdding ...

Re: The Winter Garden

Naughty bunny! We have had a litte furry creature breaking into the chooks pens and stealing their grain at night - its looks like a rat but its a bit bigger and the tail is brushy. I am guessing a bandicoot or a native species?

Re: The First Kids Have Arrived!

Another doe kidded (Mia) - three kids - two live and one dead. So I have a nice healthy doe and buck kid. Total so far is three bucks and one doe. :D The majority of bucks are castrated and sold off as pets or freezer. I don't keep an entire buck unless it has been ordered and a deposit paid by a pu...

Re: Unexpected Calf

I would say your girl is still giving some colostrum? Keep milking her out and keep an eye on it. It usually settles after the first week and the milk should be fine to drink after that.

Re: Eating Healthy Food a priveledge for the Rich?

Yes that includes meat as well. We eat fairly plain - no fancy stuff - no expensive steak etc. Occasionally I splurge and buy something really nice. But other then that its just simple things like rissoles w/ veg or casserole with mashed potato etc, chicken wings etc. We could afford to spend a bit ...

Lovely! I have always had an interest in Dexters - if I didn't have goats I would consider buying a couple of these as I like the dual purpose option.

Re: Eating Healthy Food a priveledge for the Rich?

Same here - I do groccery shop once a week but it is in and out with no fuss. I don't take the hubby or kids with me and I have a set written list. $400 a week on grocceries! Eeeek! We are the same - a family of four - hubby, wife and two teenage children - I buy all our food apart from eggs and mil...
